Leuven - Belgium, September 22 2004 - Option N.V. (Euronext: OPTI), the wireless technology company, today announced GlobeTrotter COMBO EDGE the world’s first data card combining EDGE/GPRS and WLAN (Wi-Fi) access technologies in a single PC data card. Besides incorporating multiple access technologies the GlobeTrotter COMBO EDGE offers uniquely attractive benefits and functionality making this wireless data card a “must have” for the mobile professional:
- GlobeTrotter form factor with patented retractable antenna design
- Quad-band (850/900/1800/1900) functionality which makes it suitable for US, European and Asian markets
- Supports both 54Mbps (802.11g 802.11 b) and 11Mbs Wi-Fi (WLAN) standards
Jan Callewaert, CEO at Option: “The United States is the world leader in EDGE deployment with EDGE data services now widely available across US GSM/GPRS networks. In Europe EDGE networks are being deployed either as a complement to 3G services or as an alternative access technology for network operators that do not have a 3G/UMTS network infrastructure. The GlobeTrotter COMBO EDGE being a quad-band data card is targeted to satisfy the needs of data hungry mobile professionals on any EDGE network, US or Europe. For this reason we see EDGE technology as an important addition to our existing data card portfolio. Option is currently pursuing opportunities in both geographical markets with the GlobeTrotter COMBO EDGE already in approval testing at several network operators.”
GlobeTrotter Combo EDGE will be shipping commercially as from November 2004.
The GlobeTrotter COMBO EDGE further complements and enhances Option’s current range of GlobeTrotter wireless data cards: GlobeTrotter (GPRS), GlobeTrotter COMBO (GPRS/WLAN) and the GlobeTrotter FUSION (3G UMTS/GPRS/WLAN).
EDGE, Enhanced Data for Global Evolution (E-GPRS), is a technology that gives GPRS networks the capacity to provide data services similar to the third generation of mobile telephony. By deploying E-GPRS as an overlay within an existing GPRS network operators can provide four times the data capacity of GPRS per subscriber. This in most cases can be achieved as a software upgrade to the existing network infrastructure whilst leaving existing base stations and cell sites intact. Operators already deploying 3G network services may decide also to deploy EDGE as a complementary service to 3G. In such cases data users would benefit from the higher data rates that E-GPRS provides over traditional GPRS in non-urban environments where the 3G service coverage may not be available.
On an EDGE network, GlobeTrotter COMBO EDGE enables connection to the Internet at data speeds of up to 247 kbps. Move into range of a public Wi-Fi hotspot, the corporate wireless network or the home wireless network and the GlobeTrotter COMBO EDGE provides connection at speeds up to 54Mbps. In areas where EDGE or Wi-Fi services are not available the data card still enables reliable and secure data connections over traditional GPRS.
Option offers its premier GlobeTrotter Mobility Manager™ software with the GlobeTrotter COMBO EDGE enabling users of the data card to have fast, simple and easy access to wireless data whilst hiding from the user the complexity of underlying wireless EDGE, GPRS and WLAN (Wi-Fi) technologies. In addition network operators implementing Option’s mobile IP solution, SESAM™, will be able to provide their users with a Seamless Roaming experience regardless of access technology. The GlobeTrotter COMBO EDGE, as other data cards within the GlobeTrotter family, has inbuilt support for SIM authentication (EAP-SIM) for automatic authentication and supports Microsoft’s PC Smart Card services (PCSC) within the Microsoft Windows Operating System.
PRODUCT HIGHLIGHTS
• Quad-band data card suitable for use on E-GPRS/GPRS/GSM networks World-Wide

Swisscom Mobile is embarking on a new era of mobile data communications. In August Swisscom Mobile is launching a world first on the Swiss market: Mobile Unlimited. For the first time, a PC data card jointly developed with Option (OPTI) of Belgium supports all wireless data transmission technologies from GPRS to UMTS and WLAN.
With Mobile Unlimited irrespective of time, place or transmission technology
Swisscom Mobile and Option: world première in mobile data communications
Swisscom Mobile is embarking on a new era of mobile data communications. In August Swisscom Mobile is launching a world first on the Swiss market: Mobile Unlimited. For the first time, a PC data card jointly developed with Option (OPTI) of Belgium supports all wireless data transmission technologies from GPRS to UMTS and WLAN. Swisscom Mobile NATEL® customers who subscribe to Mobile Unlimited can be connected automatically and securely to the fastest available broadband technology from any location. Mobile Unlimited is also the first product in the world to enable seamless handover i.e. automatic, uninterrupted switching between different types of transmission technologies. The card is offered by Swisscom Mobile under its own name, and its Seamless Handover technology is also being marketed internationally.
"More and more companies are finding that the ability to access their corporate network at any time and from any location, check e-mails, process orders and customer requests in real time, order spare parts, call up assembly diagrams, etc., is becoming a key criterion in the bid to stay ahead of the competition," says Carsten Schloter, Swisscom Mobile CEO. Users expect their mobile connection to be guaranteed 100%, wherever they are and whatever the available transmission technology. And they are not interested in having to make complicated settings on their own PC beforehand, thereby interrupting running applications.
Automatic selection of the fastest available technology
Mobile Unlimited does away with irritating, time-consuming PC chores. With no action required on the part of the user, Mobile Unlimited switches seamlessly from UMTS to GPRS or WLAN, automatically selecting the fastest transmission technology available in any given location. Customers purchasing Mobile Unlimited receive the Swisscom Mobile NATEL® data basic subscription, an Unlimited PC Card and a CD-ROM with the requisite Unlimited Data Manager software. From then on Mobile Unlimited takes over, ensuring secure, reliable connectivity for the user irrespective of time or location.
"Developing the hardware and software for Mobile Unlimited was a challenge," says Jan Callewaert, founder and CEO of Option NV, the Belgian company that jointly developed the new PC data card with Swisscom Mobile. "Integrating UMTS with GPRS and WLAN in such a small PC card and catering to Swisscom Mobile's requirements in terms of performance and user-friendliness, while simultaneously keeping to schedule, was no easy task. So I'm all the more delighted that it all worked out."
Mobile Unlimited offers transmission speeds of up to 384 kBit/s (UMTS) or 54 MBit/s (Public WLAN). For locations that currently offer only GPRS, transmission speeds between 30 and 40 kBit/s are available. By the end of 2004 Swisscom Mobile intends to have more than 800 WLAN Hotspots in operation and will cover 83% of the population with UMTS. Swisscom Mobile is investing some CHF 500 million in the mobile network in 2004 alone.
Standard price dependent on data volume
In terms of price, it makes no difference which technology Mobile Unlimited uses for data transfer. The price is indexed exclusively to the volume of data transferred. Customers can subscribe to different package sizes, e.g. 40 MB per month for CHF 70. The largest packages are based on the principle of 1 Megabyte for CHF 1. The subscription price can be adjusted every three months if the effective volume of data transmitted deviates from the agreed subscription volume. Tariffs are defined such that the average customer can enjoy the convenience of a mobile workspace for a monthly budget between CHF 80 and CHF 100.
Mobile Unlimited is ideal for self-employed persons and companies whose employees need to be able to access their private network irrespective of time or place. "That covers everything from one-man outfits to large international enterprises," says Carsten Schloter. Mobile Unlimited can be used on laptops with Type II PCMCIA slots, the Windows 2000 / XP operating system and 100 MB free hard disk capacity. Mobile Unlimited was comprehensively tested in the Microsoft software environment. The Office 2003 product family in particular supports the new form of mobility offered by Mobile Unlimited.
Available from August 2004 – also scheduled for international distribution
Technical development of Mobile Unlimited is now complete, and commercial mass production has begun. The product will be available from 30 August 2004 and can be used throughout the Swisscom Mobile network.
Swisscom Mobile also has high hopes of the international marketing potential offered by Mobile Unlimited technology. Carsten Schloter is convinced that "Automatic, seamless switching between different network technologies is a prerequisite for offering the mobile equivalent of the "always-on" experience that ADSL customers enjoy.“ The associated rights have been patented by Swisscom Mobile.

Option has actively contributed to personalise the data card and the software to allow Proximus to offer a product who fully comply with the needs of his business clients."
The Vodafone Mobile Connect 3G/GPRS data card plugs into a laptop and provides a simple, integrated and secure means of accessing information and data anytime, anywhere, staying always connected while only paying for the information they actually send or receive.
With data rates of up to 384kbps, the Vodafone Mobile Connect 3G/GPRS data card enables Proximus business customers to access all their usual office applications such as e-mail, calendar and internet at up to 7 times the speed of a fixed line dial up, and up to 10 times the speed of GPRS.
Currently Option supplies the 3G/GPRS Vodafone Mobile Connect Card to over 15 mobile operators within the Vodafone 3G footprint.

Leuven, Belgium – October 21st 2004 - OPTION (Euronext: OPTI), the wireless technology company, today announced that it has been listed amongst the fastest growing European companies included in the 2004 Europe's 500, an annual listing endorsed by Microsoft, Boston Consulting Group, PricewaterhouseCoopers and 3i and published by Europe’s Entrepreneurs for Growth.
Option is one of 34 companies in Europe in the ‘Communications & Electronics’ sector who managed to qualify for Europe’s 500.
This year’s five hundred dynamic, entrepreneurial-driven companies who qualified for Europe’s 500 have managed to sustain growth since the year 2000, boosting employment and sales at an impressive average annual rate of 15%. Despite the challenging business environment, these champions of growth have created more than 120,000 jobs across Europe. They have continued to drive employment creating an average of 81 new jobs per year, more than one new job per week per year during three of the most difficult economic years in the last half decade.
Jan Callewaert, CEO Option: “We are pleased to have made the Europe’s 500 list for the first time in the history of our company. Both our GPRS and 3G PC data cards are the product hits that are feeding our growth. Close co-operation with our customers, the mobile network operators worldwide, and a relentless focus of our team on innovation and execution are the key success factors.”
Europe’s 500 shows that growth is not industry specific but is driven by talented, innovative, risk-taking entrepreneurs. The highest number of champions of growth in the 2004 Europe’s 500 are found within manufacturing (industrial goods) and industrial services sector, 30% of the five hundred companies, followed by IT services (15%) and management services (10%).

Leuven, Belgium – September 20 2004 - OPTION (Euronext: OPTI), the wireless technology company, and T-Mobile, subsidiary of Deutsche Telekom (NYSE: DT), one of the world’s leading mobile communications companies today announced that it has selected Option’s GlobeTrotter FUSION™ broadband wireless data card to give the mobile professional easy and seamless access to T-Mobile’s UMTS/GPRS and Wi-Fi networks.
In June of this year Option announced GlobeTrotter FUSION™, the world’s first 3-in-1 data card combining 3G, GPRS and Wi-Fi 802.11b/g technologies on a single PC Card, T-Mobile's choice for the GlobeTrotter FUSION™ clearly demonstrates the market need for broadband wireless data card solutions supporting multiple access bearer technologies.
T-Mobile operates more than 8,500 public Wi-Fi hotspots worldwide, promotes secure access to the internet or corporate networks, and provides wireless coverage with international 3G and GPRS networks. Today’s mobile professional requires ubiquitous wireless access. Option’s GlobeTrotter FUSION™ is the only broadband wireless data card solution available on the market today that fully satisfies the requirement for ubiquitous access, whilst enhancing the user data experience and convenience.
Jan Callewaert, CEO at Option: "Over the years we have built a solid business relationship with T-Mobile and I am very pleased that they have yet again selected a GlobeTrotter product for the launch of their new data card. T-Mobile’s decision to market our GlobeTrotter FUSION 3-in-1 data card is an important milestone for both our companies as it marks the third such product in the GlobeTrotter range that T-Mobile will be sourcing from Option.”
T-Mobile was one of the first mobile operators in 1999 to market data services in Germany with Option’s FirstFone™, a GSM 900 data card. In 2002 T-Mobile launched its GPRS packet switched data services with Option’s GlobeTrotter GPRS data card. In 2003 T-Mobile selected Option's GlobeTrotter COMBO GPRS card with on board WLAN. Currently Option’s GlobeTrotter data cards are marketed under the T-Mobile brand in Germany, United Kingdom, The Netherlands, Austria, Czech Republic, Hungary and Poland.
David Hytha, T-Mobile’s Executive VP of Terminals says: “T-Mobile is committed to simple, seamless communications. Today’s announcement is another milestone enabling customers to take their office with them on the move. Full broadband speeds and T-Mobile’s unique Wi-Fi offering brings this strategy to life. Currently there are over 8,500 T-Mobile HotSpots worldwide. T-Mobile is delighted to be working with Option in the next stage of our mobile access offering.”
On a 3G network the GlobeTrotter Fusion™ enables broadband connection to the internet at data speeds of up to 384kbps. Move into a range of public WiFi hotspot, the corporate WLAN or your home wireless network and the GlobeTrotter Fusion™ provides connection at speeds up to 54Mbps. In areas where 3G or WiFi services are not available GlobeTrotter Fusion™ still ensures reliable and secure data connection over the widely available GPRS services.
