Australian operator Telstra rolls out Option’s HSDPA data card with Receive Diversity for greater performance in wireless connectivity
Leuven, Belgium – November 16, 2006
Option N.V. (Euronext: OPTI; OTC: OPNVY), the wireless technology company, today announced that Telstra is offering Australians the world’s fastest cellular connection following the launch of Option’s GlobeTrotter GT MAX “7.2 Ready” HSDPA data card as part of the "Next G" wireless mobile broadband service. As well as its cutting-edge performance, Option’s GT MAX series features the unique integrated flip-out antenna: for ease and convenience, the antenna is simply retracted for briefcase or carry bag transport without the need to remove the wireless data card from the laptop.
Sold under the brand of Australia’s leading telecommunication company serving more than 8.5 million users, the GT MAX “7.2 Ready” delivers tri-band HSDPA at data speeds up to 3.6 Mbps. Option’s next generation wireless data card is already compatible with mobile network infrastructure equipment capable of supporting higher HSDPA data rates of up to 7.2 Mbps. Backward compatibility ensures HSDPA connections at lower data rates of 3.6 Mbps and 1.8 Mbps. The wireless data card also has inherent support for 3G operation at 384 kbps as well as quad-band EDGE and GPRS. Besides operating at 2100MHz, GTMAX also supports Telstra’s 850MHz frequencies making use of Telstra’s extended geographical 850 MHz footprint. The GT MAX’s support for this low frequency band and the built-in Advanced Radio Technology further enhances indoor connectivity.
Jan Callewaert, CEO Option commented: “Working with Telstra has been a major landmark in Option’s history. By assisting our customer in Australia complete the world’s first commercial deployment of 3.6 Mbps HSDPA with receive diversity, we have enabled Telstra to differentiate its proposition through superior performance while delivering significant operational efficiency gains.”
Option’s unique Advanced Radio Technology (ART) internal architecture differentiates the GlobeTrotter GT MAX “7.2 Ready” from other HSDPA devices by introducing Receive Diversity and Receive Equalization into the product design, delivering important performance benefits to users and operators.
Receive Diversity exploits dual antenna and receive chains to improve signal reception and reduce the impact of spatial variations in signal strength. Receive Equalization, on the other hand, improves immunity to interference of the radio signal. In usage scenarios tested during GT MAX field trials, ART improved average throughput speeds up to 50% compared with non-ART devices giving greater connection stability and higher data throughput vastly improving the overall user experience. For operators, mobile receive diversity increases network capacity by up to a factor of two while reducing base station power requirements.
The tri –band 2100/1900/850 MHz GlobeTrotter GT MAX “7.2 Ready”, announced in June of this year, is initially configured for 3.6 Mbps operation. As mobile networks are upgraded to offer data rates up to 7.2 Mbps, a simple user initiated “Flash upgrade” issued by the operator will boost card performance up to a maximum data rate of 7.2 Mbps. The GT MAX “7.2 Ready” is also the first Option data card to use patented Zero-Install technology which eliminates the need for the user to pre-install drivers, or a software application, in order to use the device. This data card is truly unique Plug ‘n Play solution: no user install, no user installed application, no driver CD.

Option HSUPA data card – QUALCOMM chipset- Nortel infrastructure
Leuven, Belgium – Wednesday October 11, 2006 - Option (Euronext: OPTI, OTC: OPNVY), the wireless technology company, today announced that they have successfully completed the industry’s first demonstration of live HSUPA (High Speed Uplink Packet Access) data card calls reaching a wireless uplink transmission rate of 1.3 Mbps and a wireless downlink of 2.7 Mbps at application level. The test calls were carried out at Nortel’s* (NYSE/TSX: NT) research campus in Chateaufort, France. Commercial availability of “HSUPA-Ready” and full HSUPA products from Option are planned for the first half of 2007.
HSUPA, the next step after HSDPA, enhances the data speed in the uplink up to a theoretical maximum of 5.7 Mbps, from the 384 kbps currently available with HSDPA. Higher performance is achieved through more efficient uplink scheduling in the base station and faster retransmission control. Whereas HSDPA (High-Speed Downlink Packet Access) enables users to receive large data files across the “downlink”, HSUPA increases the speed at which users can send large data files across the “uplink”. Traditional business applications along with many consumer applications will greatly benefit from these enhanced uplink speeds.
A laptop fitted with an Option HSUPA data card (category 3 in uplink, cat 6 in downlink) based on QUALCOMM (NASDAQ: QCOM) Mobile Station Modem ™ (MSM™) MSM7200™ chipset and commercial HSDPA/HSUPA network equipment from Nortel were used to achieve the new record data speeds. The companies completed an initial series of tests showcasing the HSUPA advantages for a large number of applications such as: uploading a 15 MB file onto a server, sending and receiving e-mails with large attachments, demonstrating the simultaneous HSD (High Speed Downlink) and HSUPA capabilities and video conference over IP. In addition, the HSUPA and HSDPA calls were also conducted in a car while driving at 50 km/h. The tests clearly demonstrate the capacity of mobile wireless broadband for high quality Mobile-TV, High Definition Video on demand, MP3 downloads, person-to-person data applications and real-time person-to-person gaming.
Jan Callewaert, CEO of Option: “Another world first for Option, this successful HSUPA test confirms our product roadmap is on schedule and underscores our commitment to bringing the most advanced wireless broadband solutions to market. The strong relationships that we enjoy with leading chipset suppliers and infrastructure providers – QUALCOMM and Nortel, - are important elements in our continuing technological and product leadership.”
“This demonstration is an important milestone in making true wireless broadband a reality,” said Dr. Sanjay K. Jha, president of QUALCOMM CDMA Technologies. “QUALCOMM is pleased to be working with Option to drive HSDPA and HSUPA deployment for wireless users around the world.”
Option announced its first HSDPA demonstrations at CeBIT 2005 and CTIA Wireless 2005 tradeshows. In September 2005 the company announced its worldwide unique “HSDPA-Ready” concept. In December 2005 Option was the first to demonstrate data cards working at 3.6 Mbps. Subsequently in January 2006 this year Cingular demonstrated Option’s 3.6 HSDPA card live at the Las Vegas Consumer Electronics show. In June 2006 the company announced its “7.2 Ready” product, the GlobeTrotter GT MAX, as a continuation of its HSDPA strategy. With today’s announcement of the world’s first HSUPA data call the company is further building on its leadership in cellular technologies.

Leuven, Belgium - October 5, 2006 - Option N.V. (Euronext: OPTI; OTC: OPNVY), the wireless technology company, today announced that revenues for the three-month period ending September 30, 2006 will be EUR 75+ million with net positive earnings. Although the top line results for the period will be below previous guidance, revenues for the quarter will still represent an increase of 35% compared to the EUR 55.9 million posted in the third quarter of 2005. Full-year revenue growth is now expected to be 50% compared with the previous guidance of 75%.
Wireless data cards sales, which are ahead of forecast in volume terms, are now expected to account for 89% of 2006 unit sales compared with the previous guidance of 75%.
Although significant progress has been made in the new category of non-PC data cards, the markets for embedded modules and fixed wireless are not yet growing as fast as anticipated. Current business models for embedded PC modules have yet to achieve the market breakthrough desired or expected by laptop manufacturers and their mobile carrier partners. As a result, Option expects the non-PC data card business to account for 11% of its 2006 unit sales instead of the previously forecast 25%.
However, with its established operator customer base and increasingly close ties with laptop manufacturers, the company remains in a strong position as the market develops. Option announced customer agreements for its wireless modules with Acer in February 2006 and Samsung in September 2006. At the time of the Q1 earnings release, May 4th 2006, the Company announced a design win with an undisclosed OEM and has subsequently secured a fourth design win with one of the world’s top ten laptop manufacturers.
Demand for wireless modules based on 1.8 Mbps HSDPA – a technology that only entered the market earlier this year - has also been held back by anticipation of the more advanced 3.6 Mbps version of HSDPA which offers higher bandwidth and has the potential for post-sale upgrade to 7.2 Mbps. The faster technology appeals strongly to end-users, operators and laptop manufacturers alike.
Although growth rates have been constrained in the short term, the longer term trends are positive and Option remains confident that it has the technological expertise and speed of execution to lead the market as HSDPA continues its rapid evolution: the company has already announced its first commercial “7.2 Ready” product and also has a “7.2 Ready” wireless module in test with its laptop partners.
The entire management team is focused on maintaining Option’s leading position in the wireless data market through the execution of its growth strategy based on an innovative product roadmap that is recognized globally, the “5 by 8” program and continuing the expansion of its global presence.
The announcement of the full third quarter results is scheduled for October 26, 2006.

Los Angeles, September 15, 2006 - Option N.V. (Euronext: OPTI; OTC: OPNVY), the wireless technology company, congratulates HSBC and Vodafone for winning the 2006 3G A-List Award in the category of UMTS/HSDPA. Now in its fourth year, the QUALCOMM-sponsored awards program is designed to recognize innovative and successful enterprise wireless data solutions based on third-generation (3G) standards. During CTIA Wireless I.T & Entertainment 2006 in Los Angeles, HSBC, one of the world’s largest banking and financial services organizations, was honoured with the 3G A-List Award in the UMTS/HSDPA category. HSBC equipped their sales force and corporate users, who were utilising a variety of laptops, with Option wireless broadband data cards running on the Vodafone UMTS/HSDPA network to enable them to connect to the bank systems from anywhere.
London-based HSBC has an international network comprising more than 9,500 offices in 76 countries and territories in virtually every corner of the globe. HSBC has approximately 284,000 employees and more than 125 million customers worldwide.
HSBC’s main objective was to enable its mobile sales force and other corporate users to connect to bank systems from anywhere. The company was looking to untether its mobile sales force and empower them to engage with customers in real time by providing the ability to transmit data from applications on their laptops while they were with the customer. Previously, users either had to dial-in from home or return to a bank branch to connect to the network. This travel time was eating into the time that could be spent servicing customers. The business case for the UMTS/HSDPA implementation was driven by the commercial side of the sales force who greatly desired mobile connectivity.
Half of the 4,000 users equipped in the initiative were retail bank sales staff and the rest were corporate employees. Connectivity was achieved via a Citrix® interface or through an iPass® dialler and Cisco VPN connection. An additional benefit of the UMTS/HSDPA cards, HSBC added, is that IT can update anti-virus signature files over the air, eliminating the need for sales people to visit an office to update their security.
The annual 3G A-List Awards, organised by Qualcomm, honour outstanding wireless implementations that demonstrate creativity, innovation, and overall business impact. Assessment criteria includes how the winning company or organization exceeded business objectives in terms of achieving higher return on investment, lower operating expenses or increased user satisfaction. More information about the 2006 3G A-List Awards honourees and their innovative solutions can be found at http://www.3galist.com/winners.html

Unique Features of GlobeTrotter GT MAX
- Unrivaled features in a single wireless Data Card device;
- Five Band flip-out Antenna design (Patented technology);
- No need to remove the card from the laptop for transport;
- Tri-band HSDPA/UMTS 2100/1900/850 MHz bands – compatible with World Wide usage;
- Advanced Receiver Technology (Receive Diversity & Equalisation);

GT MAX, now shipping in volume to 3 Scandinavia, is being marketed locally in Sweden and Denmark under the 3 brand.
The GT MAX enables 3's customers to access a new generation of mobile services, including mobile broadband, mobile video and mobile music at speeds more than 50 times faster than dial-up and up to five times faster than other 3G networks. With average download speeds over 3’s Turbo3G network of 1-1.5 Mbps, and peak rates of up to 3.6 Mbps, the GT MAX also allows 3 Scandinavia to offer an alternative to fixed broadband for the smaller enterprise and household consumer markets...
The GlobeTrotter GT MAX “7.2 Ready” is a future-proof product being compatible with mobile network infrastructure equipment that supports HSPA download data rates of up to 7.2 Mbps. This means existing GT MAX “7.2 Ready” users will not need to replace their data cards when 3 Scandinavia start upgrading its network to 7.2 Mbps HSPA early next year.
Jan Callewaert, CEO of Option said: “The flexibility and versatility of wireless broadband combined with Option’s advanced technology, including tri-band HSDPA, Receive Diversity and “7.2 Ready”, are enabling 3 Scandinavia to target new mobile and fixed customer segments now without compromising their infrastructure evolution strategy.”
Backward compatibility ensures HSDPA connections at data rates up to 3.6 Mbps or 1.8 Mbps depending on the upgrade status of the network locally. The wireless data card also has inherent support for 3G operation at 384 kbps as well as quad-band EDGE and GPRS.
Option’s Advanced Radio Technology (ART) and unique flip-out antenna design differentiates the GlobeTrotter GT MAX “7.2 Ready” from other HSDPA devices. Featuring the combination of Receive Diversity and Receive Equalization in the card design, the dual antennae and dual receive chain greatly enhances signal reception and reduces the impact of spatial variations (fading) in signal strength. Receive Equalization, on the other hand, improves immunity to interference of the radio signal. For the network operator, mobile receive diversity reduces the power required in the base station and potentially increases by up to a factor of two the resultant network capacity.
In usage scenarios tested during GT MAX field trials, ART improved Internet connection speeds by more than 50% compared with non-ART devices giving greater connection stability and higher data throughput vastly improving the overall user experience.
3 Scandinavia is the leading 3G operator in Sweden and Denmark with more than 614,000 subscribers and a market share of 50%+. The company is owned by Hutchison Whampoa (60%) and Investor (40%). Mobile products & services are available under the 3 brand in Sweden, Denmark Australia, Austria, Hong Kong, Ireland, Israel, Italy, and the United Kingdom.
